Political Parties of Germany: Present and Past

Update: since the 2017 general election, here is an updated table of the German parties as well as the historical results since 1871. 

German parties included:

  • Communist parties:
    • Weimar Republic and West Germany: KPD
    • East Germany and Unified Germany: SED/PDS/Linke
  • Social Democratic parties:
    • 2nd Reich, Weimar Republic, West and Unified Germany: SPD
    • Weimar Republic: USPD
  • Progressive/cultural revolutionary parties:
    • West and Unified Germany: Grüne (Greens), Piraten
  • Christian Centrist parties:
    • 2nd Reich, Weimar Republic and West Germany: Zentrum
    • West and Unified Germany: CDU-CSU
  • Classical Liberal parties:
    • 2nd Reich: DtVP/DFoP/DFrP/FVg/FVp/FVP
    • Weimar Republic: DDP/DStP
    • West and Unified Germany: FDP
  • National Liberal parties:
    • 2nd Reich: NLP
    • Weimar Republic: DVP
  • National Conservative parties:
    • 2nd Reich: KP/DKP/DKP-DRP/DRP

    • Unified Germany: Republikaner, AfD
  • National Socialist and Fascist parties:
    • Weimar Republic and 3rd Reich: NSDAP

This post is divided into two parts. On the top you will find an overview of the largest six German parties (plus the NPD as the largest far-right party, to give a comparison), on the bottom you will find a "timeline" of the most important political parties since the first (unified) German election in 1871. The width of a bar indicates the success in the previous general election, the arrows show party mergers and party splits.
